Roskilde 2013

I was lucky enough to be invited to paint along side some of the best writers in the world for one of the biggest festivals in the world – ROSKILDE festival in Copenhagen.
More than 1km of wallspace was painted over the week leading up to the Festivals opening. Each artist was given a large wall to paint in one of the main areas of festival. Check out all the other photos on their facebook page

UNSTOPPABLE, COLLINGWOOD.

Finally managed to get car free photo’s of the new Unstoppable wall Rone, The Tooth and I painted in Collingwood for Independence Australia.

Independence Australia is a local community organisation that helps people with disabilities or physical needs with a variety of services.  Also a big thanks to Masters for donating the paint and supplies for the project.

The wall was marked up on a grid and painted over 2 days with only one lift, something l don’t think we’ll be attempting again!

Big thanks to Thomas and Emily for help on filling all the letters. Progress shots below are also by Emily.

Thanks to all the people who helped on this one, was a fun project to donate our time towards.

SUBURBAN Ian Strange ⋅ 26 July 2013 ⋅ National Gallery of Victoria

We are super excited to finally see this project come to life- if you are anywhere on the 26th of July it should be the NGV.OK enough talk, just watch:

Ian Strange: SUBURBAN from Ian Strange [KID ZOOM] on Vimeo.

Delivering his largest and most ambitious project to date, Australian born, New York based artist, Ian “Kid Zoom” Strange presents SUBURBAN, a multifaceted photography, film and installation exhibition opening at the National Gallery of Victoria on July 26.

Since recreating a full-scale replica of his childhood home inside Cockatoo Island’s Turbine Hall in Sydney, 2011, Strange has continued his ongoing investigation of suburbia. For the past two years Strange has travelled across the East Coast of the United States working with a film crew and volunteers in Ohio, Detroit, Alabama, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire to create, photograph and film eight site specific interventions incorporating suburban.

Suburban presents eight large-scale photographic works, a multi-channel, surround sound video installation along with carefully selected fragments of the original buildings that Strange has saved and re-presents as both sculptural objects and social artefacts.

On the exhibition, David Hurlston, Curator of Australian Art, National Gallery of Victoria, said, “We are excited to be able to present this ground-breaking exhibition of work by Ian Strange. From his early work as a street artist in Australia he is now a noted contemporary artist with a developing international standing. Strange is fast becoming recognised, both locally and internationally, for his distinctive practice and, in particular, for this new and unique body of work.”

Cinematic in both tone and scale, SUBURBAN investigates the iconography surrounding the family home and its place in the current economic climate. Through the work, Strange articulates his own conflicted relationship with suburbia he experienced growing up in the Australian suburbs, juxtaposed with living in New York City and the United States.

“This project has been all consuming for the past two and a half years of my life”, said Strange. “I wanted to create a body of work that reacted to the icon of the suburban home and to the suburbs as a whole. The suburbs have played an important role in shaping who I am as a person and an artist. The suburbs have always been home, but I have always found suburbia isolating. SUBURBAN is my reaction to that.”

SUBURBAN opens at NGV Studio, located at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Federation Square on July 26.

Stolen Space – VII . London

Stolen Space has just opened their new gallery space in London.

Reka, TwoOne & Myself were lucky enough to contribute to the amazing line-up of artists.

Full details & pics below

———

VII’

Group Show

12.07.13 – 28.07.13

With a bit of luck, and a lot of talent, StolenSpace has entered its 7th year as London’s primary authority in Contemporary Urban Art. Having started to feel the 7-year itch for bigger and better projects and exhibitions, we have made the exciting decision to move to a new venue:

StolenSpace

17 Osborn Street

London E1 6TD

Our new 1400 sq ft gallery space, steeped in local history as it was once a stonemason’s workshop, is still within the vibrant creative hub of East London’s Brick Lane and The Old Truman Brewery. So although we have itchy feet we haven’t moved too far!

In this year’s 7th month, we are feeling very fortunate for our past successes and exciting new beginnings, therefore, for the premier exhibition at StolenSpace’s new home, we would like to introduce a Group Show, ‘VII,’ inspired by this lucky and symbolic number.

Whether or not you are of a superstitious persuasion, the number 7 carries with it a myriad of significant connotations. Since the beginning of time, this number has held a powerful place in theological, historical, scientific and cultural memory. According to the Old Testament, the Earth was created in 7 days, in Hinduism there are 7 Chakras, in Christianity there are 7 deadly sins, in Islam there are 7 levels in heaven, and in Judiasm there are 7 blessings and 7 days of mourning. Furthermore, there are 7 days in a week, 7 colours in a rainbow, 7 seas, and 7 wonders of the world. A recurrent motif in art and literature, this number signifies Shakespeare’s 7 Ages of Man and the 7 notes in a traditional musical scale. The associations go on and on, and the potential for creative investigation is almost endless.

On 11th July 2013, StolenSpace will open its brand new doors to the public with ‘VII,’ a group show exhibiting longstanding favorites and fresh newcomers. With tasty refreshments courtesy of Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new location, inviting you to share in this celebration of our lucky 7th year.

Meggs x Steen Jones, ‘Year of the Snake’ Mural

At the begginning of 2013, Myself & Young blood Steen Jones, decided to collaborate on a large-scale ‘Year of the Snake’ themed mural to comemerate the 2013 Chinese Zodiac.

Melissa-Findley-SJXMeggs-Northcote-36.jpg

Serpents are one of the oldest mythological symbols, quite often used to depict duality, life-cycles & wisdom, which has made them a interesting recent subject for me to explore.

Referencing these elements of the coiled snake, duality and the ‘sacred garden’ we came up with a composition of hands reaching through flora in attempt grasp and take control of a multi-headed snake. For me this was also reflective of the (2013) year ahead, opportunity & excitement with a great deal of risk!

The actual location of this wall has been somewhat hidden in back-street factory carpark, in the suburb of Northcote, Melbourne. I’ve always liked the idea of pieces being seen by those willing to search or randomly stumble across. So to see this wall in person, you’ll have to do some hunting!
